Pendant light

2016

A collaboration between Strate Design School, Paris and Nottingham Trent University.

The team was tasked over 2 days to design lighting that could be rapidly and simply manufactured using CNC, water jet and laser cutters.

The final design was exhibited in the Sense of Sight Exhibition held at Nottingham Trent University. Part of Nottingham Light Night 2018.

The final light shade was made from polypropylene, which wraps around itself and is held in place with a 2 pronged frame made from ash that slots in between the bayonet of the light socket. This simple method of assembly makes it easy for the user to assemble and replace parts cheaply and efficiently. CNC & laser cutting were used in the manufacturing process.

Using paper for the ideation phase we discovered how the layering of the paper created a really nice purple effect. The contrast of various shades of purple worked very well and we decided to create mood lighting to go in a kitchen/dining room environment. Ideally the lights would hang in a set of 3 or 4 over a kitchen counter top or dining table.
